Gusto + Jaapi

Automate your swag store from Gusto. Gusto's official Zapier triggers forward new hires and terminations to the store's user API, so accounts and welcome credit follow your payroll — no engineering required.

Yes, Jaapi integrates with Gusto — with one honest caveat up front: Gusto doesn’t offer API access to its own customers (their API is reserved for approved software partners). So instead of a direct feed, the integration runs on Gusto’s official Zapier app, which your admin controls: hire and termination events flow from Gusto through Zapier into the store’s user API. No engineering, no waiting on anyone’s partnership program.

How does the Gusto integration work?

Gusto’s Zapier app provides New Employee and Employee Terminated triggers. A two-step Zap forwards each event to your Jaapi store’s user provisioning API (the same SCIM 2.0 endpoint our identity-provider integrations use), authenticated with a Bearer token from your store settings. New hire in Gusto → store account with welcome credit; termination in Gusto → account deactivated and unspent credit reclaimed.

We provide a working Zap template during onboarding, so setup is copy, paste token, turn on. Note that Gusto is a premium app on Zapier, so it requires a paid Zapier plan — most teams running Zaps already have one.

For the initial roster (the people hired before the Zap existed), you export a custom report from Gusto — email, name, hire date, department — and we import it in one go. Gusto can also email you that report on a schedule (daily through annually), which doubles as a periodic cross-check that the store still matches payroll.

What does the Gusto sync automate?

  • Onboarding. A new hire in Gusto gets a store account automatically, with any welcome budget allocated on their first day rather than in week three.
  • Offboarding. A termination in Gusto deactivates the store account, and unspent credit returns to the company wallet.
  • Welcome credit. The most common Gusto pairing: every new hire gets a fixed swag budget on arrival, no HR checklist item required.

How do I set up the Gusto integration?

  1. In your Jaapi store, go to Settings and generate an API token.
  2. Connect Gusto to Zapier (your Gusto admin authorizes it once) and copy our Zap template.
  3. Paste the token, run the built-in test, and turn the Zap on.
  4. Export a custom report of current employees from Gusto and send it to us — we import the existing roster and agree the credit rules with you.

Most teams are live within a day or two.

Should I use Gusto or my identity provider for this?

If your company runs Okta, Entra ID, or JumpCloud, SCIM provisioning from the identity provider is the more direct route for accounts — see our identity integrations. Gusto’s typical customers are US small businesses on Google Workspace without a dedicated IdP, and for them the Zapier route plus Google sign-in covers both halves: Gusto drives who has an account, Google handles how they log in. Our HRIS swag automation guide has the full comparison.

Is the Gusto integration secure?

Yes. Gusto’s Zapier connection is authorized by your Gusto admin and scoped by Gusto’s own permission model; requests to Jaapi use a store-scoped Bearer token over HTTPS; new accounts are validated against your allowed email domain; and every provisioning action is audit-logged. Jaapi AB is ISO 27001:2022 certified, GDPR compliant, and hosts all data in the EU.
